Get Grounded! April Healing PIES Practice
This is part of April’s “Our Public Memory” PIES emotional Practice on healing our shame. If you missed this newsletter, read it here.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious or need to calm yourself, here are some grounding practices to try and get yourself back to center. These were developed by our healing team with Dr. Rain Warren, who led our March virtual healing circle.
Breathe. Breathe naturally, easily being gentle to yourself and focus on the rhythm of your breath. Take your time and just breathe.
Embrace Facts: Center and ground yourself by adding up the immediate facts of where you are in time in space. For example:
“I am sitting on the edge of my bed. I am in my bedroom; in my home; in the town of Hamilton, on the island of Bermuda, in the Atlantic Ocean, on the planet Earth, in the Solar System, in the Milky Way Galaxy, in the Universe.”
You can also do things like:
Rinse your face with cool water or wipe it with a cool wet cloth. Take a comfortably cool shower.
Tend to your plants or garden. Sit or walk with your bare feet in the grass. Lay down in the grass if you can.
