Spending Time Outside - April Physical PIES Practice
THIS IS PART OF APRIL’S “OUR PUBLIC MEMORY” PIES physical PRACTICE ON taking radical and restorative action. IF YOU MISSED THIS NEWSLETTER, READ IT HERE.
Hey friends,
I want to encourage you now that spring is here, and we’re focusing on regrowth and grounding, to spend some time outside in nature. Breathe in the air (watch out for that pollen!) and absorb some sunshine when you can.
As someone who’s been quarantining in place since the pandemic began in March 2020, it’s really easy to sit at home, all day, every day and forget what it's like to feel the sun on my skin.
To re-ground myself and fight against the anxiety and depression this kind of insulation and isolation causes, I challenge myself to go outside of the house and take in the sunshine at least once a week. Every Friday, I have a reminder on my calendar to ensure that I’ve spent time outside with nature.
It doesn’t have to be a two-hour hike. For me, it can be as simple as walking around in my driveway, listening to a book for 30 minutes. Or spending a few minutes outside while the family dog runs around and does his usual investigation of our surroundings.
Then once that time is over and I’m back inside, I spend a few minutes reflecting on what that meant for my mind, body and spirit. When I’m feeling particularly low and don’t have an opportunity to go back outside, I meditate on my time outside and relive those feelings of warmth and freedom.
If you’re already out in nature constantly, congratulations! Make sure to relive those moments with mindfulness and meditation when you’re back inside.
Love,
