A Conversation With the Founding Mothers
This is part of March’s “Our Public Memory” PIES Spiritual Practice on Sharing Our Stories. If you missed this newsletter, read it here.
For our second anniversary, we wanted to bring to public memory the history of Political Healers and honor the architects - three amazing human beings - of this group: Brandy Brooks, Arique Aguilar and Mary Spaulding.
This project wouldn’t exist without them, and it’s a privilege to celebrate what has been accomplished over the years.
The following videos are excerpts from a deep, celebratory conversation about Political Healers.
Brandy Brooks is from Kensington, Maryland and is Executive Director Mich Lovegood’s “ride-or-die human” in her life. She’s co-director of the BIPOC-led consulting organization One Square World and is running for office for councilmember at large for Montgomery County (and is breaking fundraising records)!
Arique Aguilar coined the phrase “political healers” and led the women of color table at TakeAction Minnesota. She mobilized women of color for the 2018 midterm elections. Mich said her “cosmic intuitive sense of what works for collectives is so on-point.”
Mary Spaulding is one of the original participants in the TakeAction Minnesota women of color table and has been an advocate in self-agency and collective agency in the mass incarceration system. She’s an honest and real mom always concerned about others’ well being.
